"You better have a plan!" Coach Mark Peters would throw his hat down on the ground 5 yards behind an offensive tackle. "Don't make a move until you get to this hat!" For an offensive lineman that's never a fun sound. You know what's about to come. A guy running full speed for 5 yards that's about to hit you with one of his best moves. No matter if it was Cordarion Soloman, Zaycoven Henderson, or Larry Thomas, Peters would always yell out, "You better have a plan!" As a blocker you've got to practice the counter for every move a defensive lineman is going to use. It takes having good eyes and anticipating the move you think is coming. Sometimes you can prevent moves from happening, sometimes you end up on a highlight film.
I always took things from football and tried to apply them to my life. I've always had a plan. As an 8th grader, I walked up to King and told him I was going to be the starting center for him. I knew when I went to college I was getting out there in 4 years and I was going to teach at LHS and coach football. I was 19 when I decided I was going to marry my wife as soon as I could afford to. I've been determined and I listened Coach Peters, I had a plan.
The crazy think about having a plan is when it doesn't align with God's Plan. I invited Maci Hopkins to be on the podcast a couple weeks back and she talked about how her initial plan didn't quite match up with the plan God has for her. She had to adjust and she's still continuing a journey that she's trying to align with God. For me it's not that smooth. The past couple of years I've been trying to live out my own plan, and time after time I've been receiving big loud ass NO's from God. I've been wanting to control the narrative of my life, for all my life and I'm stubborn, ask my wife.
Sometimes life offers you a different route than what you think is the right way. It's not easy to accept it. I can't even pretend that I'm handling it flawlessly either. When life hits you with a good move you've gotta turn in to that good offensive lineman an offer a counter. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is about how the races doesn't always go to the fastest nor the battles aren't always won by the strongest. Life is sometimes about being in the right place at the right time. You may be qualified, you may be better than, and sometimes it doesn't work out for you. You might be great for that job, that person, that situation. Sometimes it ain't meant for you. Keep your faith, God's got you. He'll take care of you better than you can take care of you.
