There's a lot of things going through my mind as the weekend and the NBA Playoffs draw nigh. 8 different playoff series with 8 different matches, with a bizillion different outcomes possible. Here's my 10 thoughts going into the weekend.
1. How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh, outweighed the bad.
I thought we'd get to see forever, but forever has blown away.
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
Something had to give, and although it was time, it's tough to see Dez Bryant walk. There was a clear disconnection between him and Dak Prescott on the field, and Dallas chose their 24 year-old quarterback over their 29 year-old, 15 million a year, wide receiver. Dez has went from cursing my eyes as my enemy at Lufkin and Oklahoma State, to dazzling them in his 9 seasons with Dallas. It was amazing while he was at his peak, and it's been sad at his worst. Good luck to this bEast Texas monster.
2. Spurs win first two games before losing in 6 to the Warriors
It's your best bet to believe that Greg Poppovich is scratching at the bit to prove his coaching prowess. Without his best player, Pop and 2/3 of the Big Three (although old as hell) are going to leave Oakland with two road victories and send the NBA on it's head. Kerr is gonna sit back, puff his magic wand 😉 and Steph Curry will be back and the Warriors will sweep the Spurs after dropping the first two.
3. Raptors and Wizards will be the only sweep.
The Wizards are a mess. Their starting center and star point guard have beef that has split their locker room. Anytime you publicly throw shots, especially shady ones, there's no way the locker room doesn't split. John Wall is always liable to go off and win a game on his own, but Toronto will be out to send Cleveland a message and The North will rise again.
4. Philadelphia continues their success.
The 76ers have trusted the process. The process has come into fruition. Ben Simmons is an absolute joy to watch. You've heard the Magic Johnson comparisons, and Simmons can absolutely control the entire game. He sees angles that most don't and has the confidence and skill set to make pass that most won't. He hasa swagger , the poise and bravado to beat the Heat with or without Joel Embid.
5. Dame over The Brow.
Damian Lillard and Anthony Davis deserve MVP and all NBA performances based on the position they've put their teams this year. Lillard has been amazing all year, averaging 23 points and 6 assists this season. Anthony Davis has the Pelicans in the playoffs after playing 2/3 of the season without DeMarcus Cousins. With a new life Rajon Rondo and company, Davis is ready to win his first playoff series. Too bad he won't. The Trail Blazers, particular Lillard and McCollum, have playoff experience. They've hit big shots, they've won big games, and they also have lost them. That experience is what's going to take them over the Pelicans.
6. The Greek Freak in 6.
The Bucks return to the playoffs, and though their last performance was shaky to say the least, the Bucks have way too much talent for the Boston Celtics. The Celtics chances dimmed when they lost Hayward in the first game. Their chances are now completely dark. Brad Stevens will find a way to win 2 games against the Bucks, but Terry Rozier is not Kyrie Irving.
7. LeBron flexes in 5.
During Zero: Dark Thirty, The King has sent a message.
He hears you. He knows you're doubting. He knows James Harden is going to win the MVP. He hates that. He's heard some of you say Ben Simmons sees the floor better than him. He's laughing. He will show you.
8. Too much star power for the rook.
OKC's season has been a constant roller coaster. And while many people point and direct their attention to a somewhat disappointing season, Oklahoma still has the best two players in this series in PG13 and Brodie. While the Jazz play great team basketball and have the best FIRST year player in the league, it won't be enough. Thunder in 7.
9. The Beard will dazzle.
I expect the Timberwolves to win game 3, but that's the only game they'll win. James Harden is going to win the MVP, and he's going to respond in a massive way. I expect Harden to drop 30 on Jimmy Butler 4 times in 5 games. While I like KAT and Wiggins, these 2011 Bulls won't be able to beat the Rockets.
10. Top5 Baptist Choir Songs
There's literally thousands of church songs, we all sing them, and all of them tell their own story about praising God. My top 5 songs I enjoyed hearing the most while attending church at East Springfield Baptist Church in Gilmer, Texas under the musical genius of Velvet Rose Wright. My Aunt is a wonderful talent and if you've ever listened to her play and noticed she doesn't read music, you know she's definitely influenced by a higher spirit.
5. Trouble In My Way
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG7gqQm7XzI
My favorite recorded rendition of this song is by the Soul Seekers in 2010. It starts with a cold bass line and some good churchy drums. This blues edition is like the feel you would get at East Springfield and one that made the church rock and roll.
4. Noah
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSxcXqNIlIM
This song caught wave in Gilmer around 2012 and it's been raining out there ever since. The Gospel Wonders version of this song is what was imitated in our church. While we weren't nearly as crisp as The Gospel Wonders, my daddy does an excellent job of leading this fun worship song.
3. When I Rose This Morning
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXTk46IfDTg
In her heyday, my Aunt Rose could slap the keyboard and belch out a powerful rendition of this song. It's my favorite to hear her sing and she does an excellent job of imitating the Mississippi Mass Choir's original.
2. That's Enough
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvTnAYoPD_4
The version of this song, led by my Aunt Shirley Jean, that we sung was a remix because we made the words fit for us. If you listen to it at our church, you might notice there's a vamp or two missing, but hey we countryfolk make it work for us. It's a song that has and uptempo and the kind of song that typically makes drummer want to show out.
1. Nearer My God To Thee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw7yQLRbxlM
This version of Sam Cooke's is a nice edition, but excuse my extreme bias, my father's rendition is 10x better. This song draws so much emotion out of me, mainly because it was my father singing. I'm slightly ashamed that he's shifted some old women's postures while singing this one, but nonetheless it's a great cry to be closer to God.
