This weekend was full of tremendous football on all 3 levels and proved to show that football is the greatest sport, like ever. Momentum is a real thing, especially in football, and with the big MO on your side things can shift, shift quickly.
5. Texas 48 Texas Tech 41
Over the years, these two rivals have hooked up and put on tremendous shows and Saturday was everything you'd expect from the Big 12. The Horns led by Sophomore QB SamTebow Ehlingher led the way throwing for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns. Carthage's own Keontay Ingram toted the load for Texas, going for 83 yards on 14 totes and a tug on the day. Longview people are pretty familiar with the name Jett Duffey. The Mansfield Lake Ridge QB who beat the 'Bos in back to back years, led the comeback storm for Tech as they scored 24 points in the 4th to make the score even at 41. Duffey threw for 441 yards and ran for another 80, but his comeback came up short as Ehlinger hit Lil' Jordan Humphrey on the game winning fade route with 21 seconds remaining.
As a Horns fan, it's encouraging to seeTebow Ehlingher play well in end of the game situations. At least 3 of their losses from the year before came from poor decisions in the 4th quarter or overtime last year. Texas is 7-3, in the top 15 in the country, and has the majority of their players coming back next year (stay Collin, please.) 10 wins isn't a far fetched idea, which hasn't happened at UT in a while.
4. Alabama 24 Mississippi State 0
Dogs never had a chance. Nick Fitzpatrick, QB for Miss. State, came into the game with over 800 rushing yards. He left with -23. Alabama's defense is absolutely smothering and have given up 3 points in two weeks. That's ridiculous. I've always doubted the SEC, especially when it comes to their ability to stop someone else. The last couple of times on a National stage over the years, against other conferences, they've given up tons of points and yards: OU last year against Georgia, OU versus Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, Clemson versus Alabama in the National Championship. Bama's defense is different, but will it stand the test against teams who are willing to throw and spread, instead of the 3 yards and a cloud of dust style of the SEC?
3. Melo, Melo, Melo
NBA Live 2005. Carmelo Anthony was on the cover, and the man that was going to rival LeBron James as the best player in basketball for the next decade and a half. After 2011, the man has been a shell of his self, and his selfish style of basketball has finally caught up with him as Father Time has taken away ability. Melo is a first ballot Hall of Famer. He's going to go down as perhaps the 2nd or 3rd best small forwards scorer ever. But what Melo has turned into over the course of the last two years in NYC, OKC and now Houston, is painful to watch. Melo's a guy that operates out of the mid-range. He's a back down fade away, Michael Jordan style of iso basketball. Ever since the Golden State Warriors started the trend of lay ups or 3's basketball, Melo hasn't fit. There's one hope for Melo...... LeBron. Go to L.A. Melo. Come off the bench. Teach Brandon Ingram some moves. Give the Lakers a solid 16 minutes a game. You do well in this role, LeBron gets Kawaii or Anthony Davis and then you gotta shot at winning the ring. Swallow your pride or retire Melo!
2. Dez
"Damn. Damn. Damn." The infamous words of Florida Evans, resonated to the highest levels Friday afternoon. I hate it for you gee. It sucks, and what's worse is the reality of the situation. It took half a year and an injured reserve Cameron Meredith, and a couple of phone calls from Jason Witten and Tony Romo for Dez to even get a shot, and he was healthy. Now that he has a ruptured Achilles, I'm not sure if 88 is going to get that shot. I hope he does, but the man ain't Terrell Owens. T.O. distraction or not, is Adrian Peterson of wide receivers. He's a freak physically, heals quickly, and could play til he's 50. But, Dez has been regular since being injured in 2016. I hope the best for you, I fear reality though.
1. But uhhh.... How Bout Dem COWBOYS
For a game in which nobody but the 100 men in that locker room believed that they had a chance last night, Dallas dominated the defending Superbowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Dallas does two things well. Play defense and feed Zeke. The problems of Dallas offense with Dak and the throwing game improved last night. At this point we magnify all of Dak's issues, but we won last night, so let's look at the positives. Dak threw for 270 yards and no interceptions. He hit 8 different targets, which shows that ole Scott Linehan is coaching his ass off as well. The offensive line has taken it's hits this year, the biggest one being Travis Frederick being out with an autoimmune disease. Things looked even worse when Zack Martin went down, but he returned, and made a helluva difference. Zeke flying over the heads of dbs, was a great sign to see.
Dallas dominates on the defensive line with a bunch of no name guys. Dorance Armstrong, Antwaun Woods, have complemented Tyrone Crawford, Demarcus Lawrence, and Randy Gregory tremendously and these men compete. Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch are amazing young linebackers, and the way 55 played last night has me saying "Ridley who?"
PLAYOFFS
It's that time and just like March Madness, I don't have a clue who's gonna win this thing, but GO LOBOS and GO EAGLES!
Game Predictions
G1: Longview 56 - Copperas Cove 21
Longview's athleticism is going to be too much.
G2: Longview 61 - Prosper 35
Typically the area round places Longview against a Dallas region team which means it'll probably be at Lobo West, aka Dallas Kincaide Stadium, where I'll take King over any Dallas squad.
G3 Longview 42 - Klein Collins 28
"Get your lil punk ass out the car Craig! This is the REMATCH" A rematch from last year's round 3 and Isiah Spiller's out here looking for revenge! I think Longview's offense is too potent and I think the 'Bos get the dub!
G4 Longview 35 - Temple 16
I'm full of Drake lyrics here's one for this game. "Don't be ducking like you never wanted nothing" Whether or not it was intentional Temple's on a collision course with the Lobos, I'm taking my guys.
