Top 10 Longview Lobos Quarterbacks Since 2000

With the passing of another great Lobo Season it's time to revisit my all-time position lists and see how things have shaken up.

Years: 2014-15

Ross came over from Harmony his junior year and spent the year backing up Dez Chumley and Castleberry. He played sparingly, although he started at free safety in the infamous "Walmart Game." Going into his senior year, Ross balled in the spring and won the job going into the season. He took Longview to the 4th Round before losing to MAnsfield Lake Ridge in a 56-53 classic. His amazing Manziel like play against MAnsfield Summit is one of the craziest plays Ross threw for 1,496 yards and 13 touchdowns while also rushing for 3 touchdowns.

Years: 2007
CollegE: Kilgore

Damion lewis entered the 2007 season with a qb battle with a sophomore aaron johnson. d-lew held him off and put together one of the better playoff runs in school history. lewis took the team 4 deep in 07 with power running and consistent accuracy to playmakers travrus brown and david larsen. Lewis threw for 1,857 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2007.

I just cleaned my locker out and saw a freshman depth chart from 2019 at the top of my locker. At the QB position were 4 quarterbacks. At the bottom of that depth chart was Jordan Allen. Jordan was the 9th grade B-Team QB that season, and by no means did he look like he could be the guy. The classes above him had no QB. The A-Team starter from his freshman year proved to be just hype. So who started for the Lobos, His Sophomore year? The 9th Grade B-Team QB. He struggled, but thanks to Kaden Meredith and Jalen Hale, Allen could hide behind them and took Longview 3 rounds deep. His junior year, Josh Thomas moved into Longview. Jordan held him off as long as he could, but eventually Thomas, who's exceptionally talented, took his position. That brought Allen to a cross road. He went to work and his senior year put together a run for the ages. He threw for over 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. The best number was his smallest number: 3 interceptions. He played clean football and delivered on time passes to his receivers. An incredible story: from a kid that was an afterthought on the depth chart, to the starting QB that led his team 5 rounds deep in the playoffs.

Thomas moved into Longview spring of 2021, and had to compete with returning starter Jordan Allen for the job. The competition lasted all season long, with Thomas finally taking the reigns of the offense in the season finale against Tyler. The next 3 weeks Thomas balled in the playoffs. THomas finished the night 11/16 for 198 yards 2 tds and 16 carries for 168 yards and 3 TDS against Magnolia. 2nd round against Lancaster, Thomas opened the game with a 74 yard TD run, and finished the game 9/16 for 122 yards and a td and ran 13 times for 141 yards and 3 tds. Against Denton Ryan, a team we had managed to score 16 points against in the first 2 matchups, Thomas and the offense put up 33 points in a 33-37 loss. Thomas finished the game 13/26 for 239 yards and 3 tds and ran 19 times for 46 yards.

College: Baseball (drafted by the Rays)

The position has turned into the most pivotal position on the field, even for the run heavy Longview Lobos. Dez was a 3 year starter and despite the ridicule he received from a lot of fans, he was a baller. Before I was hard on Chumley, but there's something to actually doing it. Men lie, women lie but numbers don't. Chumley is second all time in passing touchdowns with 62, and added another 13 on the ground. That's 75 touchdowns over 3 seasons. He's also one of the best 2 sport athletes to ever walk the campus of LHS. Known for getting it done at the plate, he set the school record for triples in one season, that even led him to getting drafted in the MLB Draft.

Years: 2010-12

"The Curious Case of Caraway" on the list after one season of starting at QB for the Lobos. He's an anomaly because his physical talents jump off the film, regardless of how corky his release or running style may have looked. Caraway threw for about 2500 yards in a 13 game sample, throwing for 22 touchdowns and running for 6 in his one season, crazy numbers for a John King offense. he was immensely talented, and his injury allows the "what if" legend.

6'3, 210. An eventual nfl outside linebacker, with a 4.7 40 and a 315 hang clean, pete robertson ran through the state of texas. he threw for 1,655 yards and 10 touchdowns and ran for 1,159 yards and 13 touchdowns. the 2010 playoff run is as impressive a run in school history, and #8 was the most valuable asset.

Years: 2000-2002
College: Rice

The Rice Owl started at quarterback and receiver in Houston. He is the OG of the triple option. Whether it was veer or midline, Joel was a dog. What's most impressive about Joel is the lack of talent he had around him. He didn't have an incredible amount of weapons like the other 4 guys on the list, yet he found away to lead his team to the playoffs and to one of the most heart-wrenching defeats to Lufkin in Tyler. Joel accounted for 50 touchdowns over those 3 seasons, throwing for 24 and rushing for 26.

Years: 2006-09
College: Houston

The only player on the list to lead his team to two state championship appearances. His performance his senior year, splitting time at nearly every skill position possible, allows you to see his versatility as an athlete. He threw for 1,210 yards and ran for 1,096 that year. He has a highlight reel from his junior year alone that could last 20 minutes. He played less receiver in 08, throwing for 1,628 yards and rushing for over 900.  Aaron was dominate and the number one threat on a team where his tailback ran for 27 TDS in one season and had two division 1 receivers on the field. For a career, he threw for over 2,900 yards and 26 touchdowns, while rushing for close to 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Uh.... duh.
Haynes sophomore season record was 10-1, leading his team to the 5th round throwing 2,107 yards for 25 touchdowns to 10 interceptions and rushing for 238 yards and 2 touchdowns. His junior season led Longview to their first State Championship in 81 years, throwing for 3,877 yards for 41 touchdowns to 4 interceptions while rushing for 664 yards and 8 touchdowns. After that remarkable season, Haynes was named Texas Player of the Year, 6A Player of the Year, Ford Player of the Year, East Texas MVP, and District MVP. By those standards what happened Haynes' senior year was a let down. King was 123/213 throwing for 1,926 yards for 20 touchdowns to 8 interceptions. On the ground he ran 55 times for 506 yards and 10 touchdowns. Through his 39 career games, King threw for a school record 7,910 yards and 86 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,408 yards and 20 touchdowns.
