For years we watched and heard and dealt with the stereotype that blacks didn't make for great starting NFL QBs in the NFL. While it's true there's been black starters in the league for years, the amount of starters compared to the percentage of black players in the league has lagged. But for the past decade we've seen a real emergence of the African-American quarterback in the NFL.
2010: N/A
2011: The physical phenom that is Cam Newton. Newton, from Auburn, was drafted 1st overall by the Carolina Panthers. In the 2nd round, Colin Kaepernick was drafted by the 49ers out of Nevada. In the 6th, the Baltimore Ravens selected Tyrod Taylor out of Virginia Tech.
2012: 4.38 speed and Heisman Trophy Winner from Baylor, Robert Griffin III was taken 2nd overall by the Washington Redskins and the newest highest paid player in all of the NFL, Wisconsin's 5'11 Russell Wilson was taken in the 3rd round by the Seattle Seahawks.
2013: The Year was a dud for all QBs, but E.J. Manuel of Florida State and Geno Smith of West Virginia were taken in the 1st round, but never developed into lasting starters.
2014: We saw Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater taken at the end of the first round by the Minnesota Vikings.
2015: The number 1 pick from Florida State Jameis Winston.
2016: While there weren't any black QBs selected in the first round, 4th round pick Dak Prescott of Mississippi State, emerged as the best of the qbs, early and has performed consistently since.
2017: Two of the most talented at the position in National Champion Deshaun Watson of Clemson and Texas Tech’s phenom MVP Patrick Mahomes.
2018: Lightening bolt, Lamar Jackson, Louisville’s second first round draft pick of the decade, was selected in the first round by the Baltimore Ravens.
This year 2 African-American quarterbacks are the highest rated quarterback prospects, Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins should both be drafted within the first 10 picks of the draft. Contrary to the stereotype, the two quarterbacks are completely different. Murray, 5'10 205 lbs. is the top rated QB, and although he has 4.3 speed, Murray's arm is what's getting him paid. The Heisman trophy winner threw for 4,361 yards and threw for 42 touchdowns. Haskins, 6'3 231 lbs, was the top passer in college football. With 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns to 8 interceptions, Haskins clearly was an elite passer. Nonetheless, people still place black quarterbacks in the same category, nevertheless, a black analyst at that. Stephen A. Smith sees "Haskins as more of a runner than passer." The 5.0 40 he ran proves that people see color rather than skill.
Although none of the prospects are considered sure-fire NFL starters, the fact that there are 2 black QBs towards the top is proof of the end of stereotypes. It doesn't mean these two will be great in the NFL. Everyone assumed that Ryan Leaf would be a great quarterback after being taken number 2, just like we all assumed Russell Wilson would be a career backup. It's happening. The world is ending as we know. Athletes are evolving all over and it's amazing. It's a white boy (Matthew Boling) running 10.10 flat in the 100 meter dash. There's a white quarterback (Haynes King) that runs the 40 in 4.47 here in Texas. The stereotypes that have plagued our minds for a year are changing and I'm definitely here for it.
Haskins led the NCAA in both passing yards and touchdowns this season. |
