The legacy talk is over. Some players resume is better than others, but that doesn't make them more talented. Who would you start? Who would you sit? Here's mine.
Rush Defensive End: I need speed on the edge, and players disciplined enough to keep the edge for me against the rush. I want the physical freak in Carson, the current Raven Bowser, and Houston's Dekalen Goodson.
1. LaGaryon Carson
2. Tyus Bowser
3. Dekalen Goodson
Nose Guard: In my 4-3 scheme I typically want the quicker of the two defensive tackles playing the shade on the center. With Daylon Mack you get the ideal nose. Speed and power and demands a double team. Backing him up, I want Pierre Leonard and Bubba Vactor.
1. Daylon Mack
2. Pierre Leonard
3. Bubba Vactor
Defensive Tackle: I want my tackle to stay in b gap, so I need a larger guy to take on the double teams he'll face constantly. I'm taking McKinner Dixon as the starter followed by JaMarcus McFarland and Carthage's DeShun Williams.
1. McKinner Dixon
2. JaMarcus McFarland
3. DeShun Williams
Strongside Defensive End: This end will take on tackle and tight end combinations often so I want someone with strength and poise playing this position. You can't go wrong with 3 time All-East Texas first teamer Eddie Jones. I'll take Tim Crowder from JT as his replacement and Bronson Massie as my 3rd option.
1. Eddie Jones
2. Tim Crowder
3. Bronson Massie
Weakside Linebacker: This player will have to remove from the box and cover tight ends and slots, so I need some of my smaller, faster linebackers here. Lathan is a perfect fit for this spot, as well as AJ Davis and Mykel Gates from Carthage.
1. DeMarkus Lathan
2. AJ Davis
3. Mykel Gates
Middle Linebacker: My dream is to always have a tall, huge person standing in the middle of a defense and absolutely wrecking shop. Sounds like 6'4 255 lbs. Steve Edmond is a perfect fit for this role. 6'3 230 Marvin Byrdsong is a great replacement and the 6'3 255 pounder Dalton Santos fits this role.
1. Steve Edmond
2. Marvin Byrdsong
3. Dalton Santos
Strongside Linebacker: This player will stay in the box and tackle so covering isn't that huge for me in this spot. Rodderick Muckelroy starred in this role at Texas so I'll roll with him. Behind him we'll roll with Burns and Earnest.
1. Rodderick Muckelroy
2. Curtis Burns
3. Dustin Earnest
Cornerbacks: My starting two corners have to be able to lock down in man coverage, as well be fluid in zone coverage. It's hard to argue with a Thorpe award winner and a man who is a two-time All East-Texas selection.
1. Aaron Ross and Leonard Hewitt
2. Jalen Carr and Curtis Brown
3. Alton Dixon and Aaroy Foy
Free Safety: Last line of defense, this player has to be able to track a deep ball and get to it in a hurry. I'll take length here and go with Overshown here followed by ball hawk Chris Hackett and Alonte' Darden.
1. DeMarvion Overshown
2. Chris Hackett
3. Alonte' Darden
Strong Safety: Run support and great coverage skills, this position will be difficult to choose, because there were so many great ones.
1. Jerrin Thompson
2. Brandon Jones
3. Cartez Beall
Nickel: Combination of coverage and closer to the ball to make tackles. This guy's gotta bring a presence in run support and in the flats.
1. Jephaniah Lister
2. Cartez Beall
3. Alton Dixon
