In preparation for the Top 100 Lobos since 2000, I want to look at some of the best from some of our rivals and neighbors. This week let's take a look at the best 10 Tyler Lee Red Raiders over the past 20 years.
10. Zach Hall
Years: 2013-15
College: N/A
Zach Hall is statistically one of the best offensive players in Lee's history. He is a 3 year starter at QB and owns the record for most pass completions, passing yards, and touchdown passes at Lee. As a sophomore, Hall threw for 1,124 yards on 73/133 passing for 8 touchdowns to 9 interceptions. As a junior, Hall threw for 2,072 yards for 19 touchdowns and for a finale, Hall threw for 2,001 yards and 18 touchdowns. On top of those 45 touchdowns passes, Hall was an incredible rusher. He rushed for 3,738 yards for 52 touchdowns in his career.

College: Oklahoma State
Before Pettigrew went on to become an NFL tight end, he was catching passes from Matt Flynn. As a senior Pettigrew finished First Team All-East Texas and All-State. At Oklahoma State Pettigrew caught 112 passes for 1,450 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round, where he played 7 years and caught 301 passes for 2,965 yards and 17 touchdowns.
8. Matt Flynn
Years: 2001-02
College: LSU
Matt Flynn is better known for his career at LSU and in the NFL, but once he was a 2 year starter for Mike Owens, Matt Flynn threw for 3,329 and 22 touchdowns to 18 interceptions during his career. His last four games he played with a broken foot before bowing out in the state semifinals. Owens has called Flynn the best player he's ever coached.
7. Jason Stripling
Years: 2003-04
College: Washington State
If there's ever a time to make a play, it's during the playoffs. Stripling made 2 of his biggest plays in back to back weeks to help the Tyler Lee Red Raiders win State in 2004. A pick 6 in the state semifinal against Euless Trinity and a 69 yard pick six against Spring-Westfield pushed the Raiders over the top. Stripling was voted First Team All-East Texas as well as District MVP in 2004.
At Washington State, Stripling made a position change from safety to linebacker where he started his senior year.
6. Martel Van Zant
Years: 2001-03
College: Oklahoma St.
A 3 year letterman and 3 star prospect, Van Zant recorded incredible numbers through his tenure at Tyler Lee. He finished his career with 21 interceptions, and had 39 tackles and 10 pass break ups as a senior on his way to being named All-District, and All-East Texas. Van Zant started 2 and a half years at Oklahoma State. He had 2 career interceptions, both his junior year and 128 tackles throughout his career.
5. Tekerrian Cuba
Years: 2004-06
College: TCU
The 6'4 210 lbs. Cuba is a 2 Time All-State and a first team All-East Texas guy, just an outstanding player for the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. A 2 year letterman at Lee, Cuba was instant impact his junior year being named 2nd team All-State. In his senior year, Cuba was named first team All-State after an 87 tackle, 5 for loss, 3 interceptions, 1 forced fumble and blocked field goal performance. For a career he had 145 solo tackles, 78 assisted tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 3 defensive touchdowns.
4. Justin Warren
Years: 2000-02
College: Texas A&M
Tyler Lee's career sack leader was an intimidating presence. At 6'3 220 pounds, Warren struck fear into his opponents. At Lee, Warren had 17 sacks and was ranked as the number 1 Outside Linebacker prospect in the nation. As a freshman Warren was awarded to the Freshman All-American team after having 32 tackles, 4 for loss. As a sophomore Warren had a pick 6 and in his last 2 seasons at A&M he recorded 188 tackles.
3. Derek Farmer
Years: 1998-00
College: Texas A&M/SFA
A Prep All-American, Farmer set the school record for rushing yards in a career in 2000 with 3,742 yards which is now second, and has the second and thirst most rushing yards in a season with 1,934 yards in 1999 and 1,800 yards in 2000. He had 22 touchdowns in 2000 and finished his career with 42, which stands as 3rd most. Farmer started his collegiate career at Texas A&M where he played for 3 years. He rushed for 1,582 yards and 11 touchdowns, before he transferred to SFA. He played in 6 games, rushing for 492 yards and 4 touchdowns.
2. Tyrone Ross
Years: 2001-04
College: N/A
This 5'8 180 pounds of lightening is Tyler Lee's record holder for rushing yards. One of the few Red Raiders to letter 4 years, for a career Ross finished with 4,748 rushing yards, 1,768 coming in 2004, the year Lee won the State Championship. The two-star prospect was the 2004 District MVP of 11-5A. His 25 touchdowns in a season is a record at Tyler Lee as well as his 55 touchdowns for a career.
1. Ciron Black
Years: 2002-04
College: LSU
Ciron Black is a huge, huge man. That was obvious from the jump in Tyler. On top of being huge, he was good at football. As both a junior and senior, Black was named First Team All-District and All-East Texas in 2003 and 2004. His senior year he was 5A First Team All-State averaging over 4 pancake blocks per game. When he arrived to LSU he redshirted, but started every year afterwards. Throughout his career, Black started 53 straight games, leading his way to a bevy of college awards.
He was 3rd Team Freshman All-American and all Freshman SEC. In 2007 and 2008 he was second-team All SEC, before becoming first team All SEC in 2009, wining SEC's Top lineman award, and was a 2nd Team All-American. Brown made it to camp as an undrafted free agent, but his NFL career never took off.
